Clouds Recounted - Commission to Fit Your Space
There are times when you fall in love with a piece of artwork, but maybe it’s not quite right for your space. Each piece of artwork is truly unique, and can’t be replicated. However, commissioning a painting inspired by a few pieces you love can be beautiful way to bring a new piece to life that is custom to you and your home.
I was recently asked to do a commission based on two pieces I created back in 2018. “Cloudline” and “I Memorized this Morning” were two serene and minimal paintings with a soft gray, blue palette. Inspired by the subtle movement of clouds, the ethereal quality of early morning fog, and captivating moments of stillness, I can close my eyes and stir up the quiet memories linked to these paintings. Both pieces evoke a dream-like quality that I was excited to revisit at a larger scale.
Creating work based on former paintings is a little like stepping back in time. Quiet moments studying the billow of gray clouds and walking along the banks of Lake Keowee before the rest of the world was awake, I fondly remember the serene scenes I was painting from.
I mixed a palette of grays and blues and poured water across my panel, letting the ink stretch and swirl while guiding it with my brush. After building up fluid layers, I moved on to thread. I always begin wrapping thread by establishing a horizon line on the painting. Strand by strand, I closely stacked an intricate set of threads to push back the deepest point. From there, I worked to find a balance that would bring structure to the organic layers and carry your eye through the full piece.
At 66 inches long, the commissioned piece would stretch down a hallway, creating a lovely moment of pause as you move through the space. I’m so thrilled with how this special painting came together, and as always, seeing it installed in its forever home was icing on top of the cake.
