"Listen Close": Paintings Born Outside

There’s a spot I stumbled upon recently where a creek runs along large slabs of exposed stone. Tucked within the trees, it’s become a favorite little retreat of mine to sit, read and take notes. Recently I decided to bring some supplies along with me for an exercise in listening, observing and directly responding to a place.

Painting outside presents a a new set of elements to consider. With paper rolled out upon a slab of stone, the ink is guided by the grooves and slopes of the uneven surface. Painting to the steady rhythm of the creek rushing by, it’s immersive and easy to become fully absorbed in where you are. As I worked I watched the shadows move with the sinking sun. I traced the warm hues tucked within the chilled surface of the stone, highlighted with patches of light that lingered for only so long. I observed autumn’s golden brown tones shift and flutter, sending out soft notes as they scattered across the ground.

Back in my studio, I pulled my favorite fragments from my outdoor painting to mount on panel, refine and place threads. This mini series, “Listen Close”, is a small reminder of being present with a place and listening to its language. Available to shop here.
